Enoch Stewart Family Cemetery
Enoch Stewart and his family arrived in
Fayette County around 1839 and established residence on a parcel
of land owned by Tobias Grider. Enoch, who worked as a carriage
maker, remained on the Grider property until he moved to Coahoma
County, Mississippi in 1856. The conditions under which Enoch
occupied, and buried his family on Grider's property, is
unclear, however the circumstances suggest a family relationship
between the two.
This cemetery represents the family plot of the Stewart family.
Located in the cemetery are the grave sites of Enoch's wife and
son, Ann and James Edward. Also present is the grave site of
Mary, wife of Edward Stewart. It is possible that Mary and
Edward were the parents of Enoch. The site is in very poor
condition, with the stones off their bases. There is no evidence
of the presence of unmarked graves.
Found on privately owned property adjacent to the Ames
Plantation, the cemetery is in a thicket of brush adjacent to an
agricultural field. The cemetery is located at U.T.M. coordinate
E295396 N3887007 which is on the USGS, Grand Junction TN 7.5'
quadrangle map.
