Wiley B. Jones Family Cemetery #1

wiley b jones cemeteryThis cemetery served as the family plot of the Wiley B. Jones family from the 1840's until 1880 at which time the family relocated to property just north of LaGrange, Tennessee. Wiley B. Jones was one of the more successful plantation owners and businessmen in the area. He and his family contributed greatly to the history of the Ames Plantation land base.

Established in the 1840's, the cemetery contains the graves of three individuals. Two of the graves represent the final resting place for Thomas B. and Lucy F. Jones, children of Wiley and Mary Jones. A third grave for which the original marker, if ever present, is lost possibly represents the burial site of Thomas E. Jones, another of Wiley and Mary's children (born August 1, 1849 - died August 29, 1859).

The cemetery is located inside a split rail fence just east of the intersection of Mount Comfort Road and Buckle Way. Approximately 200 yards to the north is the home occupied by Wiley and his family. Designated state historic site number 40FY363 by the Tennessee Division of Archaeology, the cemetery can be found at U.T.M. coordinate E299614 N3889360 which is on the USGS Hickory Valley, TN 7.5' quadrangle map.

In 1990, as part of the Ames Plantation's ongoing restoration program, the Wiley B. Jones Cemetery was restored in an effort to preserve this important historical site. Funding for the restoration project was provided by Mr. Russ A. Pritchard Jr., descendant of John Walker Jones, Wiley B's brother, and Trustees, Hobart Ames Foundation.
