Willis Person Family Cemetery
The Person family arrived in Hardeman County
in 1834. Willis and his wife Lucy raised their family on a small
farmstead located in western Hardeman County near the
Fayette/Hardeman County line. In addition to farming, Willis
served in some capacity as a Methodist minister. The Person
family remained on their Hardeman County land until 1855 when
Willis sold the property and moved to Fayette County.
This cemetery which is located in a wooded area 200 yards
southeast of the Person homestead represents the family burial
plot of this early Hardeman County family. The gravestone of
Lucy A. Person, who was buried in 1852, is the only marker found
today. Evidence suggests that there are no unmarked graves
present.
The site has been designated state historic site number 40HM131
by the Tennessee Division of Archaeology. It is located at U.T.M.
coordinate E301735 N3886513 which is on the USGS Grand Junction,
TN 7.5' quadrangle map.
