Hunting and Outdoor Recreation
Hunting and outdoor recreational activities are as much as a
part of our culture today, as it was during Mr. and Mrs. Ames
lifetime. Hobart and Julia Ames had a love for the outdoors that
took them horseback riding, hunting and fishing. They came to
the Plantation during late December and would normally stay
through Mid-March to April. They conducted the National Field
Trial Championship for bird dogs during their stay, for over 35
years. They would leave here and fish in Maine and Canada or big
game hunt in the West. This was a ritual, year after year.
It is our desire to continue their tradition of outdoor
recreational activities on Ames Plantation, but with a different
twist. We are making the Plantation resources available to a
select group of individuals, those who like the peace and
serenity of a forgotten time in West Tennessee. We have
established the Ames Plantation Hunting Club, with a limited
membership that enjoys squirrel, deer and turkey hunting. Guided
quail hunts will begin on a limited basis during the fall of
2006 to anyone that desires to step back in history and follow
the dogs on foot or in a horse drawn wagon. We will offer limited hunting dates for Fall, 2006 and Spring, 2007. We will conduct some guided turkey hunting in
the Spring of 2007. Our staff is continuing to develop duck
hunting habitat to be utilized sometime in the future. We are
trying to develop a sporting clays shooting course on the
Plantation to be used by our Guest. People worldwide continue to
look for locations that will take them back in time to “re-live”
some of the good ole days. Those days when Hobart Ames and Nash
Buckingham hunted these hallowed grounds, always searching for
“good game and better dawgs”. Those days will once again be
heard and experienced on Ames Plantation.
